Oh, some weeks were great. I happened to hit a sale or thrift store at just the right moment. I was thrilled and would make a great profit. But all too often I was coming up empty. Some other vulture had “picked the bones clean” before I got there.

I remember when I realized that operating my business “vulture style” by scrambling for books was going to have to change. I arranged to take an early lunch to be at the book sale of the  local library down the street.  The Craigs List advertised 5,000 books, a relatively small amount, but I guessed that should be enough to find some good treasures and finally eat off the “fat” of the land like an eagle.

When they opened the door I was horrified with what I saw. One woman was literally pushing people away.  Another  man was running down the isles grabbing bunches of books which he toss into his bag only to leave most of them in a corner on the floor after he scanned them.  Others seemed to have all the good books memorized and simply walked up and down grabbing titles quickly – much quicker than I could!

I realized not only was I a vulture, but the other vultures were faster and better at cleaning those bones than I was!

I quietly put my scanner in my pocket.  I resolved to find another way.  I did not want to be a vulture any more!

I wish I could say that I discovered a great method to soar like an eagle overnight. I did not. But slowly, after several months and through interaction with different individuals, I realized something very, very important!
